What is the Health Care Justice Campaign?

The Health Care Justice Campaign is a project of the Campaign for Better Health Care, working in cooperation with over one hundred groups and individuals statewide.

Our goal is to make sure the General Assembly fully implements the Health Care Justice Act by enacting a plan that follows the principles of affordability and accessibility.

Estimated Savings Under Illinois Covered

A recent analysis undertaken by nationally respected health care economist Dr. Ken Thorpe, Ph.D., of the net costs and savings for Illinois business and households resulting from the proposed Illinois Covered health care reform plan reveals that Illinois will enjoy significant health care savings. Here are some key points of Dr. Thorpe's study:

The Status Quo Scenario (without health care reform)

  • Illinois health care spending will nearly double over 10 years
  • Health care spending will grow 1 ½ faster than the state economy
  • Health care spending will grow more than twice as fast as wages in the state
  • From 2008 to 2011,
    • Illinois business health care spending will increase $5.4 billion
    • Illinois household health care spending will increase $6.7 billion

Health care savings generated by the Illinois Covered plan (2008-2011)

When fully implemented in 2011, cost containment measures will cause reduction in private health insurance premium growth of:

  • $645 per year for an individual contract
