What is the Health Care Justice Campaign?

The Health Care Justice Campaign is a project of the Campaign for Better Health Care, working in cooperation with over one hundred groups and individuals statewide.

Our goal is to make sure the General Assembly fully implements the Health Care Justice Act by enacting a plan that follows the principles of affordability and accessibility.

What is Illinois Covered?

Illinois Covered (SB5) is a bill currently pending in the Illinois General Assembly. The purpose of the bill is to make affordable, quality health care accessible for everyone in Illinois.

A recent poll shows that 79 percent of Illinois voters support Illinois Covered. How will Illinois Covered expand affordable health insurance to more people?

  • Many more people will be able to get medical assistance like FamilyCare, Medicaid, and Health Benefits for Workers with Disabilities.
  • Other adults with incomes below 400 percent of poverty ($82,600/year for a family of four) can get rebates to assist them in paying premiums for insurance through their jobs or, in some cases, through the “Illinois Covered Choices” plan that they buy themselves.
  • Young adults who are not married and do not have children can remain as dependents on their parents’ plan up to age 30.
  • Affordable “Covered Choices” plans will be sold to small employers and individuals.
  • Businesses that provide health benefits will get a tax credit.
  • Illinois Covered will improve the health care system by creating an Office of Patient Protection to advocate for consumers when insurers deny care. The state will also create a “Roadmap to Health” to provide improvements in chronic care treatment and strengthen the health care workforce.

According to an analysis by Dr. Ken Thorpe, each $1 invested in Illinois Covered will generate more than $2 in savings for businesses and families, mainly through reduced health insurance premiums, resulting in a total savings of $15.6 billion over the next four years. For more information on the Illinois Covered plan, visit www.illinoiscovered.com.
