Campaign for Better Health Care

What is the Faith Caucus?

All faith traditions challenge us to engage in healing, to act with justice, and to treat one another with compassion. But our health care delivery system distributes services unjustly, rations care inequitably, and offers compassion only to those who can afford it.

The Faith Caucus, including Christian, Jewish, Muslim and other traditions, pulls from across the state of Illinois to assert the moral imperative of health care for all. We recognize that equal access to health care is not only a socio-economic issue, but also a moral issue whose impact is felt strongly within our communities and congregations.

Together the Faith Caucus has been bringing the moral crisis of health care disparity to policymakers through educational awareness events, thoughtful discussion, and prayer.

Downstate Faith Communities Show Record Sound the Alarm! Participation

Three times as many Illinois congregations from beyond the Chicago Area have participated in Sound the Alarm! so far in 2008 than in 2007. The growing recognition of the need for health care reform was summed up by one participant who said, “It is essential for the State of Illinois to respect the dignity of all residents who deserve the health care that those who can afford it receive.”

Over 100 Sound the Alarm! participants used the event as an opportunity to send faxes to their legislators advocating for health care reform during the current leglative session. We cannot afford to wait another year to fix our broken health care system.

Congregations across the state have joined together in prayer and then “sound the alarm” with a horn, bell or Shofar sounding 18 times for the 1.8 million uninsured people in Illinois.  This event is used to call on state legislators to make quality, affordable health care accessible to everyone in Illinois.

Sound the Alarm! offers many ways to take part: special prayers, sending postcards to legislators, fundraising resources and more!

It's not too late to participate! Although many congregations scheduled their Sound the Alarm! events for the first sabbath in April, many others have adapted it to fit their own schedules.
