Tips for Writing Letters to the Editor
One great way to highlight the importance of health care reform in Illinois to write a letter to the editor of your local paper. This highlights the fact that the health care crisis is a matter of concern to people in you community.
Most newspapers are happy to print letters from their readers, but they usually have some rules about the way the letter is written. Listed below are some steps you can take to ensure that your letter is accepted for publication.
- Keep it brief: Most papers enforce an upper limit of around 200 words.
- Use your own words: editors tend to dismiss letters that obviously repeat standard talking points.
- Include your contact information: It's common for newspapers to contact letter-writers to confirm their identity before publishing a letter to the editor.
- Be respectful: Letters including insulting or derogatory language will likely not be published
If you write a letter to the editor about health care issues in Illinois, let us know! We'd love to include your letter in our press section.
