Faith Community Organizer – Health Care Justice

 

The Faith Caucus is statewide and consists of individuals, congregations and denominations of all faiths. The Caucus organizes actions that stress the moral imperative for health care reform.

The Campaign is seeking an experienced organizer to serve as the Faith Community Organizer.

Job Description

  • Oversee the planning and implementation of Faith Caucus activities for health care justice. These activities include (but are not limited to) advocacy events, trainings, public awareness
    initiatives and joint letters.
  • Build relationships with congregations of various faiths in order to expand the Faith Caucus
  • Assist Faith Caucus participants in initiating their own projects that express the moral imperative for health care reform
  • Facilitate communication among Faith Caucus participants
  • Based upon experience, oversee and coordinate other related initiatives. This position offers the opportunity to grow in responsibilities and develop leadership.

    Qualifications

  • At least two years experience in community organizing or advocacy is required
  • Experience working with faith communities, especially in interfaith settings
  • The ability to articulately express the role faith can play in advocacy for health care justice
  • Initiative and the ability to work successfully with minimal supervision
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work well with colleagues and be a team player
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills
  • The capacity to multi-task and handle a wide range of responsibilities
  • Creativity in generating new ideas
  • Computer and Internet literacy with proficiency in programs such as Word and Excel.

Knowledge of faith organizations is a plus, as is study related to faith, theology or religious history and polity. Proficiency in speaking and writing Spanish is also a plus.

Lead Organizer - Health Care Justice

 

Health care is the top domestic issue facing us today, and the issue is receiving more attention from policy makers and the public than ever before. Since its beginning in 1989, the Campaign for Better Health Care (CBHC) has been a leader in addressing the health care crisis and advancing comprehensive reform at the state level.

 

CBHC is the largest health care advocacy coalition in Illinois working for quality, affordable health care for all in our state. CBHC’s membership is statewide and consists of a broad and diverse array of individuals and organizations. These include consumers, advocacy groups, providers, faith communities, labor and businesses. CBHC brings these interests together in educating the public about the health care crisis, mobilizing grassroots support for reform, analyzing legislation and developing advocacy leaders.

 

 

Job Description:

 

The Lead Organizer for Health Care Justice will work with the Health Care Justice Director and other staff in implementing CBHC’s overall advocacy strategy. This includes the following:

  • Help plan and lead implementation of statewide advocacy initiatives such as public awareness events, meetings with legislators, postcard and call campaigns and other activities that mobilize grassroots support for health care reform
  • Recruit new individuals and organizations to participate in these activities
  • Lead the expansion of the Chicagoland Working Group, organizations from across the metro area that come together regularly to work for health care justice
  • Help run CBHC’s Chicago Office
  • Oversee the Story Project, through which individuals advocate for reform by telling their personal stories of struggle with our health care system
  • Oversee the HelpLine, a toll-free phone number consumers throughout the state can call to receive guidance and information on how to obtain coverage or deal with difficulties in the coverage they currently have
  • Coordinate the work of downstate organizers so that it is connected to Chicagoland activism and integrated into overall advocacy strategy
  • Assist in policy assessment and support CBHC’s work with the media
  • Help fundraise for organizing efforts
  • Supervise staff, VISTAs and volunteers in the work above
  • Compete other tasks as needed.

 

Qualifications:

The Lead Organizer for Health Care Justice should have the following qualifications:

  • Three or more years experience in community organizing and/or social justice advocacy
  • Passion for the cause of health care justice and a drive to recruit new participants
  • Strong supervisory skills and experience
  • Initiative, follow-through and the ability to handle a wide range of responsibilities with minimal supervision
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work well with colleagues and be a team player
  • Strong organizational and communications skills
  • Computer and Internet literacy with proficiency in programs such as Word and Excel
  • A vehicle and valid Illinois driver’s license
  • Proficiency in speaking and writing Spanish is a plus. A Bachelor’s Degree is also a plus.

Technology and Communications Coordinator

 

The CBHC Champaign office is looking for an AmeriCorps VISTA to serve as Communications and Technology Coordinator. Specific duties include maintaining and upgrading the CBHC website, helping to develop and implement online communication strategies, and tracking media coverage of CBHC initiatives. Additionally, the VISTA will help with organization-wide fundraising.

 

Applicants must be 18 and should have a passion for social justice and the desire to serve their community.

 

Applicants should also possess good communications skills. Media or Public Relations experience is desirable but not required.

 

Basic computer skills are a must. Web or graphic design experience is a plus.

 

The VISTA will receive a living stipend from the Americorps program along with health benefits, a relocation stipend, training opportunities, and an education award or cash stipend upon completion of the service year. For more information about VISTA, please visit the AmeriCorps website.
